The Top Five Web Design Mistakes
If you want users to return to your website and buy your products as repeat customers, you need to avoid web design mistakes that will drive them away. Let's look at the top five design mistakes that will make users run for the hills.
- PDF Files. There's nothing that users hate worse than coming across PDF files while surfing the Internet, myself included. PDF files break the flow and make it very difficult to print or save documents because the standard browser commands simply won't work. PDF files are very difficult to navigate and they rarely match the browser window. The result is tiny font that at times, is virtually unreadable. PDF files are a nightmare for people who have any type of visual impairment. Convert all content to be browsed or read online to traditional webpage format. Use PDF files only for the distribution of e-books, manuals and other large documents.
- Bad Searches. Literal search engines cannot read hyphens, plurals, typos or symbols. These engines are difficult for all users but especially for seniors. Search is used as a tool when navigation fails. Your search engine should be prioritized to list important queries at the top of the list, especially if the search includes the name of your product.
- Font. Be sure to respect user's preference and allow them to set the size of the text on your web pages. CSS sheets give websites power to disable a browser's ability to change text size. The result is that the text is so small it is often unreadable for anyone over fifty and for those who have any type of visual impairment. If a user can't read your web pages, they won't return to your site. Always specify font in relative terms; never as pixels.
- Color Change of Visited Links. When users are navigating a website, they like to know their current location. Using color changeable links will allow users to know where they've been. They can avoid links that aren't useful to them and find links that they want to return to.
Color changeable links let users know where they've been. When links are not color changeable, users have problems navigating your site and visit the same pages over and over. This will only cause stress and frustration, which will cause users to avoid your site and your product.
- Not Answering Questions. Web users visit your site because they are interested in your product. The biggest mistake you can make is not including enough information to answer their questions. This causes users to assume your product is not what they're looking for. Be sure to include specifics where they are easily viewable. In today's busy world, web users don't have the time to read your entire website. Hidden information will send them on their way.
Remember, price is the most valuable piece of information on your site. Always list prices where they are easily seen to ensure your website and your business is successful.
